On Tuesday, April 11, Springville High students from both AP Literature and the UCBT class participated in the 5th annual Austenesque Regency High Tea held in the transformed SHS Library.
Tea was substituted with a hot chocolate bar and party food included English scones with imported clotted cream from Essex and lemon curd from Devon, white velvet soup, cucumber tea sandwiches, gourmet European cheeses, authentic French macarons, chocolate covered strawberries, cheesecake petits fours, Belgium crème puffs and chocolate eclairs with raspberries, Italian Ices atop Swedish Ginger Thins with a Mint Sprig, etc. Spillikins, cards (Whist), puzzles, origami, dancing, and promenading were some of the activities the costumed guests enjoyed.
Drama Guild provided Brent William’s costume. William’s said, “Scones!” as his favorite tea party treat.
Chloe Wilson commented on her favorite part of reading Jane Austen’s books, “I like the perspective of life during the Jane Austen time frame.” Wilson borrowed her long dress from the drama room, and her favorite tea party treat was the macarons, this was the first time she had ever tried them.
Maryanne Cheney, who also taught a contra dance, said her favorite part of reading Austen’s novels is how she satirically criticizes society. Cheney’s costume was her Aunt’s bridesmaid dress and her intricate upswept hairstyle was praised by many. Her favorite tea party treat was the finger sandwich rolls.
“No romantic conflict,” was Brian Udall’s favorite part about reading his Jane Austen work. He enjoyed the cheesecake and was engaged in playing Whist (a card game similar to Hearts or Bridge).
Megan McConnell helped prepare the cucumber tea sandwiches, and purchased her costume from the DI, accessorizing it with ribbon and appropriately styled hair bun so she closely resembled a portrait of Jane herself. Hannah Kallaker enjoyed Austen’s writing style. Her costume came from her mother’s closet and she enjoyed eating the scones. Zoe Dalley enthusiastically played the card game whist and enjoyed eating the cucumber finger sandwiches.
Ethan Beach remarked about Jane Austen’s writing, “I enjoy her witty humor.” He snagged his costume of a black tails coat from the drama room and enjoyed eating the chocolate eclairs.
Jonah Allen came up with his costume from home, fashioning his own cravat as the Duke of Nowhere, and stated he enjoys Jane Austen’s characterization as part of her writing style.
