Driver's Education

If you want/need a license before the next school year, consider signing up for the April and May classes to ensure total completion before the end of summer.

REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER DRIVER'S EDUCATION WILL BE AVAILABLE AT 8:00 a.m. ON MONDAY APRIL 7th.

THERE WILL ONLY BE 120 AVAILABLE SPOTS FOR SUMMER CLASSES!

Once the classes are full there will be no additions. NO EXCEPTIONS!

There is not a waiting list!

Please Note: We have many emails from parents asking for asking for us to change times or move their student into a class that is full or up the driving list because of family trips, family situations or extracurricular activities.

It's inappropriate for us to grant these requests and we cannot not do so.

Driver Education at Springville High is for students attending Springville High, 9th grade students who will attend Springville High, charter school, homeschool and Landmark students who live in the Springville High School boundaries. Please register for driver education at the high school you attend/will attend. Students from other schools who sign up will be removed from the program without refund.

The state allows for up to 12 months for all driver education steps to be completed. We try to finish each driver within six month.

CLASS INFORMATION:

The classroom option at Springville High is a hybrid of in-person instruction and online learning. Students attend 16 hours of in-class instruction (2 days per week) and complete a series of assignments and quizzes that are estimated to take students approximately 14 hours to complete. The 30 hours instruction time is required by the state of Utah. Nebo School District and Springville High School takes this requirement very seriously. Students who miss classroom time will be required to make-up that time at a later date, possibly delaying their obtaining a driver license. Because of this strict requirement, attendance issues and the consequences of tardiness are described below.

  • Attendance

    • Students who miss class MUST make up the time at a later date.

    • Students who miss more than 3 hours of class will be dropped from the course. If they wish to sign up for a future session they will be required to repay the $100 registration fee.

    • All hours missed are required to be made up

    • Class will start on time and attendance will be taken. Students who are late will be required to make up the amount of time they missed rounded up to the nearest 15 minutes.

  • Attentiveness

    • Students who are disengaged during class (primarily those who fall asleep or who are on their phones/Chromebooks when they are not supposed to be) will be required to make-up 15 minutes of class time for each additional offense.

  • Canvas Assignments

    • In addition to the in-person instruction there are a series of assignments and quizzes that will be provided using Canvas.

      • Students will need to complete the material with 80% or better to pass the class.

      • The assignments and quizzes are designed to take approximately 14 hours to complete.

  • Parent/Teen Night

    • Attending a Parent/Teen Night presentation put on by ZeroFatalities is one of the required assignments.

    • Each session will have one in-person Parent/Teen Night. If you are unable to attend this Parent Night you may: (1) attend another in-person Parent/Teen Night at Springville High or another location, or (2) attend a webinar Parent Night. You can find schedules for other in-person and webinar Parent Nights here.

    • Spanish language Parent/Teen nights will be available periodically as well (see calendar). They will take place the same time as the English language presentation but in another room.

    • At least one parent/guardian is required to attend the Parent/Teen Night with their student. As the title implies, this meeting is to present information to the parents, not to the students.

Range Driving Information

The driving range will run for three to four days.  Range driving may be held during the same calendar days as the classroom.

Range hours are not flexible and students cannot miss range driving dates and times.  You must meet at your appointed time.

There are no make-up days for range. If you miss range driving, you will have to make it up with the next available range group, this will be months later in the year. Range driving will take 12 hours.

DRIVING RANGE REMINDERS

  • Driving range hours are not flexible.  YOU CANNOT MISS, BE LATE OR LEAVE EARLY!!!

    • During construction all range groups will be run at Maple Mountain High School.

    • Student will be put into range groups the first day of class.  Any requests must be made at that time.  We will do our best but we will not guarantee anything!

    • You must PASS the range.  This requires your student to pass off the skills in the range with 80% proficiency.  If your student is unable to do this they will fail the range and be required to pay and do the range again.

Road Driving Information

Once the classroom and range are completed you will be added to our road driving list.  Please note we only have two instructors who drive students on the road, Mr. Snell and Mr. Lister.  Because of this it takes us THREE TO SIX MONTHS to get through the students.

  1. When it's your students time to drive on the road they will be contacted by the road instructor with dates and times available.

  2. Please note: We cannot work around your schedule.  You will need to work around ours.  We have several options before and after school.

  3. If a student is not able to safely drive, their drives will be canceled and the student will be added back to the list.  While they are waiting to be scheduled again it will be important that you drive your student.

  4. Please do not contact us about where they are on the list or how long until they drive.  We can't give you an answer to that.  Generally once a student finishes the class and range it will be THREE to SIX months before they are schedule to drive on the road with an instructor.

  5. You must PASS the road.  This requires your student to pass off the skills in a live road environment with 80% proficiency.  If your student is unable to do this they will fail the road and be required to pay and do the road again.

Driving Test Information

Once a student passes the classroom, range and road are passed you will be added to take your driving test.

  1. Once you've passed your road driving please contact Mr. Roylance, jeff.roylance@nebo.edu, to schedule your driving test.

  2. Please note: We cannot work around your schedule.  You will need to work around ours.  We have multiple options available.

  3. Your student must have a score of 20 or lower to pass.

  4. If your student does not obey traffic laws or causes an accident, they will automatically fail the road test.

  5. If the student fails the driving test, they will have the option of retaking the driving skills test again at Springville High. A student can take the driving skills test two times. After two failed attempts, they will be referred to the Driver License Division.

Spending practice time on the road with your student will have a DEFINITE effect on his/her success in Driver Education!!
