On Thursday, November 12, the SHS Red Devil football team became one step closer to the ultimate team goal by defeating the Dixie Flyers in the state semi-finals, 29-21. This victory now gives the Red Devils a chance to win the High School 4A State Championship.

The Red Devils were in control of the game as they went into halftime leading 19-0, with scores contributing from an effective running attack. Running back Alema Key scored the first two touchdowns from within the red zone; and his backfield teammate, Marcus Cas,e punched in the third touchdown of the half. The Red Devil defense shut down the Dixie offensive attack, as the Flyer’s possessions all ended in punts.

The third quarter started where the second left off, as the Red Devils scored ten more unanswered points. First a 43 yard touchdown pass from Steve Bate to Todd Gillies, then Thomas Day booted a 33 yard field goal, giving SHS a 29-0 lead going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Dixie came back big with three touchdowns and capitalized on back-to-back fumbles by the Red Devils to mount a rally that ultimately fell short when Springville’s Zach Gardanier intercepted a pass with 38.8 seconds left to help Springville escape with a 29-21 victory.

With this huge win, the Springville Red Devil football team advances to the State Championship game vs. Timpview on Friday, November 20, at 11:00 am at Rice-Eccles Stadium, University of Utah. The last time the Red Devils played for the state title was in 1985 when Scott Mitchell, senior and quarterback, took the team to a 4A State Championship win.  Twenty-four years later, Scott Mitchell is back, as Springville’s head coach.
