Financial literacy core curriculum provided by SB 154 and the Utah State Board of Education. Curriculum used for this course is from resources suggested by the State of Utah, i.e., Family Economics & Financial Education (FEFE), National Foundation for Financial Education (NEFE), and other such sites and books suggested by the State of Utah.
General Financial Literacy course includes lessons on:
· Planning and goals
· Career preparation
· Spending and credit
· Consumer protection
· Income
· Money Management
· Saving and Investing
· Risk management
Term 1
Students will use a rational decision-making process to set and implement financial goals (i.e., advertising, consumer, culture, debt collectors, demand, economy, opportunity cost, SS, inflation, etc.)
Students will understand sources of income and the relationship between income and career preparation (i.e., cafeteria-style benefits, cost of living, gross earnings, income tax, insurance, investment, pension plan, retirement, etc.)
Term 2
Students will understand principles of money management (i.e., amortization, APR, Bait and Switch, bank, BBB, contract, credit, co-signer, budget, insurances, payroll, pyramid schemes, risk management, rule of 72, loans, etc.)
Students will understand savings, investing, and retirement planning (i.e., annual report, bond, broker CD, compound interest, inflation, liquidity, mutual funds, simple interest, T-bill, prospectus, return, etc.)
