The 5A State Championship Swim Meet was held this past weekend, February 9-10, at South Davis recreation center in Bountiful.  Overall, it was a successful meet for the SHS swimmers.

The girls took 9th overall and boys took 4th.  Two of the boys relays took 2nd with one race 7/100th's of a second behind 1st.  Cameron Green is a State Champion in the 100 meter backstroke.  He also won the overall Individual State Championship for most points, and he is only a Sophomore.

The SHS State team was represented by the following swimmers:
Women’s team:
Junior Natalie Mertz - 200 medley relay, 50 free, 100 backstroke & 400 freestyle relay.
Senior Tanna Smallcomb - 200 medley relay, 100 Butterfly, 100 backstroke & 400 freestyle relay
Junior Nicole Pope - 200 medley relay & 400 Freestyle relay
(Nicole was also an alternate in both the individual 50 and 500 freestyle)
Senior Anna Brower - 200 medley relay
Junior Hanna Daines - 400 freestyle relay

The women’s team had great relay efforts with some fast splits that resulted in best times for both relays and a drop in placement compared to their initial seeding.

Men’s team: (4th place overall)
Sophomore Jordan Pugmire - 200 Medley relay
Senior Kaden Jepperson - 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle & 200 freestyle relay
Senior Michael Armstrong - 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle & 100 butterfly
Sophomore Braxton Armstrong - 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, & 400 freestyle relay
Senior Cougar Pope - 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 freestyle, & 400 freestyle relay
Senior Spencer McQueen - 200 Individual medley, 200 freestyle relay, 100 freestyle & 400 freestyle relay
Sophomore Cameron Green - 200 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke & 400 freestyle relay.

Spencer McQueen earned a spot on the podium in both of his individual events in which he placed 5th in the 200 IM and 4th in the 100 freestyle. Cameron Green took 3rd place in the 200 freestyle. He also stood at the top of the podium as the 5A State Champion in the 100 backstroke with a time of :49.95.  That time not only lowered his own school record set earlier this season, but also claimed the 5A State record and was also an All-American consideration time.  His fast swims earned him the 2018 State high point award and was named the male swimmer of the meet.

Congratulations to all the SHS swimmers who swam their best.  We had many great races with personal best times. It was an exciting meet but bitter sweet for all of our seniors who swam their last meet with a Red Devil cap.  They will be missed next year.
