The Red Devil boys cross country team continued their season last Saturday, participating in the 40th annual Orem Kiwanis Invitational. The meet was held on the UVU campus, with 30 teams attending from across Utah, and even some from Wyoming and Colorado. The boys were led by Junior Joseph Christensen’s 1st place finish in the 4A division and 11th place finish overall. Andy Shields followed next in 4th place for 4A, following him was Mark Israelsen with his 11th place finish, Tyler Ercanbrack came in 12th, and Daniel Jones finished in 17th. The Red Devil boys were also 2nd as a team out of the 4A teams, and 9th overall out of 30 total teams. Way to go Springville!
Last Thursday the Lady Red Devil Volleyball team went to work on the Salem Hills Skyhawks, roasting them in a swift three game sweep: 25-11, 25-22, 25-19. In the first set, the Lady Red Devils kept the Skyhawks in the single digits until the last few minutes, giving the Skyhawks a wake-up call. In the next set, the Skyhawks came to play and this set would ultimately decide the Skyhawk’s fate. The set was hard fought, but yet again the Lady Red Devils came out on top and continued to do so in the third set. Throughout the entire match, Turia Andrus and Kristin Clark had 23 kills between the two of them; Andrus with 15 and Clark with 8. The girls played tough and earned a solid win. Come support Lady Red Devil volleyball as they take on the Uintah Utes at our next home game, Thursday, October 1.
Last home game the Springville high school girl’s soccer team rocked their rival maple mountain team. The opponents came into the game thinking they were hot stuff, but they couldn’t handle the heat that our girls brought! The girls won 8-1 in a very enjoyable game to watch from the Springville fans. It was the largest turn out from our student body to a girl’s home game this year and it was sure a crowd pleaser! Vanessa Johnson, starting Varsity Defender, had this to say about the game, “I think it was one of the best teams we have played all season, we wanted the win and we played really intense. It was a fun game to play.” Way to go Vanessa, we look forward to all of the girls future games! Way to go girl’s soccer!

Over twelve colleges and universities were represented last Friday, September 18th, at the college tour for seniors, sponsored by Springville High’s counseling department. Nic Anderson and Matt Burnett, two SHS seniors, participated in the College Tour on Friday. After finishing the tour, Nic Anderson said, “I’m very interested in Southern Utah University; I enjoyed their presentation.” Matt Burnett added, “I’d like to attend Weber State. My older brother is currently attending Weber on Scholarship.” The tour provided an inside view to the colleges that students are thinking about attending and included application dates, programs, clubs and much more about each school. Some students felt it gave them the opportunity to better understand their options for a higher education.
Mrs. Hartvigsen has returned, except this time as our new volleyball coach! If you don’t know coach Hartvigsen, you should because she also teaches health, fitness for life, and weight training here at Springville High. When she’s not coaching, she’s a full-time mom with three children. She has plenty of experience coaching volleyball; she coached from 88-89, but had to give it up to coach softball. She was very disappointed she had to leave it behind; but, when the job opened up here at SHS, she jumped at the chance.
Coach Hartivigsen hopes the team will place top two in region and compete in the state tournament. Coach Hartvigsen said this when asked about her coaching philosophy, “I believe the athletes themselves, their goals, and needs come before winning. Wins are fun, but it’s more important to learn how to be a team.” Her favorite aspect of coaching is the camaraderie she has with the girls and the opportunity to spend time with them. When asked if she wanted to say anything to her players she said, “I admire their courage and strength, and I look forward to helping them achieve their goals.” So come support not only our volleyball team but our new volleyball coach, Mrs. Hartvigsen!
Mr. Braden Boss is our new TV Broadcasting/Commercial Photography teacher at Springville High School. Braden was born and raised in Oregon, and his wife’s name is Jen. He and his wife are expecting their first child this fall, congratulations! Mr. Boss graduated from BYU with a degree in Technology and Engineering Education.
Mr. Boss was chosen to develop a new program at SHS, TV Broadcasting. Mr. Boss is excited to have his new classroom become the “social media” center. He anticipates a great learning environment. Almost all of the equipment in the TV Broadcasting room is new. Students are fortunate to work with the most modern medias as they would encounter in daily life.
Mr. Boss gave some advice to the student body of SHS, “…learn how to learn. Academically speaking, don’t be afraid to get things wrong the first time, for that will help you learn in the long run…” We are lucky to have such a talented teacher join our faculty. Mr. Braden Boss, welcome to Springville High!
“No whining!” declares Mr. Drew Weech, the new Spanish teacher at Springville High school. Before coming to Springville, Mr. Weech taught Spanish at BYU for two years. Why did he come to Springville? “I enjoyed working with the freshman at BYU. It’s a fun age group. I thought I’d enjoy teaching high school.” Not only does he love the age group, Mr. Weech is also very passionate about the students learning effectively in his classroom. “I really want the students to speak in my class. It’s about coming out of your comfort zone, so you can come to learn the language. It will be a trial by fire.” In addition to teaching Spanish, Mr. Weech has other interests and hobbies. He enjoys spending family time with his beautiful wife and son. He also loves listening to Latino music, as well as watching action movies, such as “The Rocketeer.” Welcome to SHS Mr. Weech!
