Springville High School has several new faces in its halls this year. Perhaps the most noteworthy of them all is our new Principal, John Degraffenried. After former principal, Rick Robins, accepted the principal position at Juab High School, Nebo School District called upon Mr. Degraffenried to fill the void. Before being appointed to the SHS staff, Mr. Degraffenried was the principal at Spanish Fork Junior High for five years. He has been in Nebo School District for 20 years and has taught various classes, including multimedia, drafting, and CTE technology.
Principal Degraffenried attended Ricks College and Brigham Young University, where he obtained his masters degree in technology education. He now lives in Santaquin and is married with four children and four grandchildren. He says he looks forward to getting to know the students and being involved in activities. When asked of his plans for the future of SHS, he responded, “To continue the history of excellence.” Now that he’s been able to experience the school’s environment, he said,”I’m most impressed with the students, doing what they’re supposed to do, but still having fun.” How true that is. We all at Springville High welcome Principal Degraffenried and are glad to be graced by his presence. Welcome to our community, Mr. Degraffenried!
What’s the best way to celebrate a much wanted win in high school football? A victory dance, of course! The night greeted a new school year with joy and energy. Guided by blaring music and flashing lights, student Red Devils of all shapes and sizes gathered together in the courtyard at Springville High School. Students came together to celebrate our first home game victory against Dixie, and to enjoy the end of the first week of school. Armed with their best moves, students danced from nine thirty to nearly midnight while enjoying the sweet freedoms of being with friends once more.
In a stellar first home game of the Springville High School Red Devil Football team scored a whopping 21 to 14 against the Dixie Flyers last Friday night, August 21, 2009. The crowd was full of spirit and the band played magnificently as our football team stormed the field with fierce determination to win. After the first quarter, the score was 0 to 7. Later the Flyers made another touchdown but Springville’s spirit did not die. Aaron Grey of the mighty Red Devils scored the first touchdown making the score 7 to 14. During the second half of the game, the Red Devils had two more touchdowns, made by Jordan Sumsion and Todd Giles. Roaring and cheering, the crowd ran onto the field to celebrate the hard-earned victory. “Keep working hard, team. With effort, we’ll improve greatly and win every game!” commented Coach Bills after the game. Good job SHS!
